724.—Omnibus and Tram Conductors

charabanc conductor, motor car conductor
is conductor to charabanc or large motor car plying for hire; takes fares from and issues tickets to passengers, or examines tickets purchased at ticket office; acts as guide and describes places and buildings of interest in passing.
omnibus conductor, bus conductor (motor or horse)
collects fares on an omnibus, issuing tickets marked with amount of fare, and punched against stage for which issued; gives starting and stopping signals to driver (719, 720) q.v.; changes boards, etc., showing destination; keeps record of tickets issued, time-keeping of vehicle and details of journeys for inspection by ticket inspector (714) q.v.; is responsible for number of passengers permitted by local by-laws or police regulations not being exceeded, and for safety of passengers in boarding and alighting from vehicle.
omnibus conductor, railway ; omnibus guard
in charge of hotel or railway omnibus; sees to loading and unloading of luggage; assists passengers.
tramcar conductor, tramcar guard, tram conductor (cable, electric, freight, horse, steam)
as for omnibus conductor (motor or horse).
tramcar junior guard
assists passengers to board or to alight from car; signals to driver (722) q.v. to start or stop when conductor is collecting fares, etc.; collects fares on upper deck while conductor remains below to prevent overcrowding; assists conductor generally, more particularly during rush hours or when trailer is attached to car.
