- in charge of a car propelled by a uniformly moving underground endless cable; controls gear for connecting and disconnecting car and cable; operates hand brake.
- electric car brakesman
- accompanies motorman or driver of tramcar on very steep hills and operates a "slot brake" which grips conduit in centre of rails.
- horse tramcar driver
- drives horse-drawn tram; operates hand brake.
- motorman (tramways), tramway motorman
; tram driver, tramcar driver
- drives a tram propelled by electric motors drawing power from overhead wires or road conduit; regulates supply of current by switch handle (controller), and operates hand and magnetic brakes.
