ship repairer
a shipwright q.v. wholly or principally engaged in ship repairing.
shipwright ; fairer
one of a gang of skilled men who lay down keel blocks; fairs, i.e. lines off and keeps in proper form, each part of steel framework of ship to lines of design, using wooden ribbons, and directs frame and beam erectors (222) q.v. engaged in this work; superintends laying of launchways and launching; lays decks, and generally fits out ship; sometimes also supervises erection and maintenance of staging used by workmen.
shorer (shipyard)
a shipwright q.v. who, in big shipyards, specialises in the shoring up of ships on slipways i in dock; directs work of shipyard labourers (669); rarely used; cf. shorer (shipbuilding) (499).
