dry dock labourer
does general labouring work (not ship repairing) in dry dock; as for rigger's labourer.
felter (shipbuilding)
prepares, by cutting, and places in position strips of tarred or other waterproof material, ready for caulkers (482) q.v.
oakum spinner (shipbuilding)
rolls strands of oakum to requisite diameter for insertion by caulker (482) in crevices in wood.
rigger's labourer, sailor, sailorman, sailor's labourer, sailor gang labourer ; shipyard labourer
does any general labouring work about shipyard, fetching and carrying tools, material, assisting skilled workmen, etc.; assists generally in lifting and placing in position heavy gear; sometimes assists riggers (668) q.v. in moving and mooring ships at yard jetty.
ship breaker, ship dismantler
demolishes old ships, unscrewing bolts of plates and timber, and uncaulking pitched joints with blow-lamps; sorts and stacks metal, timber, etc., ready for cartage.
shipyard labourer
see rigger's labourer.
shore gang labourer, shore gang man
does general labouring work about yard, apart from dry docks or pontoons in ship repairing yards, e.g. assisting ship's rigger (668) q.v.
shorer (shipbuilding)
a labourer who fits shores (wooden props) under and to sides of ship, either in dry dock or on slip way under direction of shipwright (662).
slip labourer, slipway labourer
a labourer who works on slips up which ships are hauled for examination, repainting, repairs, etc.; hauls on and fastens ropes, moves and adjusts shoring blocks and props, etc.
