471.—Foremen and Overlookers

carpenter charge hand, foreman carpenter
supervises carpenters (474) q.v. engaged on a job, directs them as to how work is to be carried out, and is responsible to general foreman of the works or building in progress for efficient performance of work; sets out dimensions of wood work by measurement from plans or working drawings; indicates position of roof timbering, joists, door or window openings, skirting and similar work.

(i) see master cooper;
(ii) see shop foreman (cooperages).
foreman joiner
is in charge of a number of joiners (474) q.v. engaged on a job or in a joinery workshop; gives measurements and dimensions, or makes drawings from which joiners work; if working in machine shop, supervises progress of machined' work through to joiners for final handling; ascertains quantities of materials required and places orders through employers.
forewoman
supervises women and girls in making or finishing jewellers' show cases and other small wooden articles in a shop fitting workshop; responsible for efficient performance of work.
head trimmer (cooperages)
works with trimmers (477) q.v. and is responsible to master cooper or shop foreman q.v. for their work.
master cooper ; foreman cooper
takes general charge of coopers (477) q.v., working in a cooperage, brewery, distillery, etc., and is responsible for efficient performance of work, both new and repair; estimates for and orders materials, machines, etc.; recommends or engages and discharges coopers; directs shop foreman and head trimmer q.v. or trimmers (477) q.v.; may also direct yard labourers in unloading, stacking and washing of barrels.
pattern shop foreman
is in charge of shop in which patterns, for use of moulders (486) q.v., are made; studies office drawings; gives instructions as to how patterns are to be made, and supervises work of pattern shop generally.
setter-out
prepares from plans, working drawings and instructions for guidance of wood machinists (486) q.v. and bench hands; marks out drawings on boards or on paper, and transfers them to material, so that machinists can follow lines marked out.
shop foreman (cooperages) ; foreman cooper
supervises work of coopers (477) q.v. employed in making or repairing casks, barrels, etc., under instructions from master cooper q.v.
timber inspector (not a railway servant)
supervises timber selector (498) q.v. and checks his work.
yard foreman
is responsible for movement of timber in and out of saw mill, for loading and unloading of timber trolleys and for stacking of timber in yard, drying sheds, etc.; supervises labourers engaged on this work.
