185.—Brass, Bronze Foundry Labourers

bell chaser

a fettler q.v. who rough finishes bell, after casting, by chiselling down .pouring gates, fins, and other irregularities in casting, using hammer and chisel; cf. chipper.

bell founder's labourer ; getter-down (bell foundry)

performs any odd manual work in bell foundry, and assists bell founder (180) q.v. generally, e.g. shovels sand and clay into casting pit for making core, clay bell, and cope; makes and tends fires inside core, for drying it, mixes sand, pugs clay, for use of bell founder.

brass founder's labourer ; caster's labourer, getter-down, third hand

performs any odd manual labouring work in brass or bronze foundry; generally assists brass moulder (180) or brass caster (180) q.v.; cf. tubhand (180).

chipper

as for chipper (183).

cleaner, cleaner-up, castings cleaner, metal cleaner

dirt washer ; washman

(i) washes brass or bronze castings with a wet cloth when removed from mould, to remove adherent grease, sand, etc.:

(ii) shovels ashes, sand, etc., of brass foundry taken from neighbourhood of casting pit and furnace, into a barrow; wheels it to washing machine, shovels ashes into sieves and turns on water supply to wash away sand, etc., and to recover any brass, etc., that may have been spilled during casting operations.

emptier

knocks out sand etc., from moulding boxes or flasks, after castings have been removed.

general terms covering all persons engaged in clearing up brass castings when taken from moulds; work is similar to that of fettler (iron or steel castings) (183) q.v.; operations covered include rough filing as for foundry filer (233); floating as for filer and floater (233); emery bobbing as for emery bobber (237); tumbling as for tumbler (183); sand blasting as for sand blaster (259), and chipping, as for chipper (183) q.v.; someimes [sic] specifically designated, e.g. axle brass fettler.

sand riddler

as for riddler (183).

scourer

see fettler (brass foundry).

scourer, bell

a fettler q.v. who cleans and polishes, by dipping and by hand filing and grinding, bells after casting.

skimmer

skims dross (slag) from surface of molten brass, in crucible, before casting using a long bent iron rod, cf. skimmer (183); may be done by caster (184) q.v. from special skim gate, i.e. pouring hole in top of mould, as required during casting operation.

third hand

trimmer (brass)

washman
