assistant overseer ; sub-overseer
assists overseer (hand compositors) q.v. in control of any department which is too large to he supervised adequately by overseer in charge.
clicker
in charge of a composing section; duties vary in different establishments, but are mainly—(i) to receive copy in bulk from overseer q.v. and with it full instructions;
(ii) to give copy out in portions to compositors (522, 523) q.v. working under him, with instructions;
(iii) to keep account of copy given out;
(iv) to superintend setting up of work;
(v) (when work in being done at piecework rates) to book each man's wages, work, etc.;
(vi) to produce a general bill, showing total cost at which work is produced.
controller hand
charge hand or forewoman, over women and girls in any department; cf. controller hand (530).
examiner, bank note
an examiner (printer's) q.v. specially skilled in examining bank notes.
examiner, cheque
an examiner (printer's) q.v. specially skilled in examining cheques.
examiner (printer's) ; inspector
examines in storeroom printed sheets or forms as they come from machines to detect defects; sometimes also acts as foreman or forewoman.
foreman (wallpapers, pattern room)
supervises operation of various machines in pattern room of wallpaper factory and work of workers therein.
inspector
(i) a foreman inspecting output of printing machines;
(ii) see examiner.
overlooker (lithographer's)
(i) an overseer q.v. either generally, or in a section or department of a works;
(ii) examines sheets after printing.
overseer (bookbinder's)
superintends book folding and binding department; responsible for discipline and conduct of staff, and for quality and quantity of work done; receives instructions from manager or assistant manager of works; is sometimes responsible for estimate of cost of production.
overseer (hand compositors)
in charge of composing room; supervises and arranges work for compositors (522, 523), q.v., and gives instructions to clicker q.v. as to how work is to be done.
overseer (lithographer's)
as for machine overseer (letterpress), in charge of lithographic printing department.
overseer, machine (letterpress)
in charge of printing machine department and supervises the work of machine minders (529) q.v.; responsible for discipline and for quality and quantity of work produced; assists costing and estimating department in calculating prices.
