charge hand (tramways)
general term applied to any worker placed in charge of other workers, e.g. ganger, shed foreman q.v.
foreman, carting
in charge of cartage depot from which carts or vans are sent out on journey; arranges rosters of duties of drivers (719) q.v. to suit orders in hand, ensures punctuality, etc.; himself attends to sick horses or calls in veterinary surgeon; in small business, is sometimes also responsible for supervision of stablemen (725) q.v. and for general cleanliness of vehicles, depot and approaches thereto.
foreman conduit cleaner
directs and supervises conduit cleaning staff attached to district depot of tramway undertaking employing conduit system; prepares duties roster of conduit cleaners (729) q.v. for district; periodically pays visits (usually at night) to section of track being cleaned to ensure speedy and efficient progress and to prevent traffic being impeded.
foreman, depot
in charge of tramway or omnibus depot where staff employed is not large enough to justify services of depot superintendent (714) q.v.; as for depot superintendent.
foreman (furniture removals)
has charge of removals of furniture, carried out with aid of small body of assistants, and furniture removal van or vans (pantechnicons).
foreman, garage; motor garage foreman
is responsible for care of cars and control of staff in motor garage; allots duties to drivers (720) q.v.; superintends cleaning and repairs; arranges supplies of spirit, oil and accessories.
foreman (omnibus service)
directs and supervises operating staff, including washers and cleaners (729) q.v., at omnibus depot or entire staff (including mechanics) at small garage; arranges weekly roster of omnibus drivers (720), conductors (724) q.v., arranges for spare drivers, etc., and ensures that vehicles start at scheduled times, petrol tanks filled, etc.
foreman, platform (carriers')
directs work of checkers (717), loaders (729) q.v., etc., on platform of general carriers' depot; allocates duties and organises method of loading drays, etc., to ensure prompt handling and despatch of goods.
foreman, railway cartage
is responsible to goods agent (700) q.v. for allocation of duties to cartel's (719) q.v., attached to railway goods depot, for time-keeping, etc., for maintaining supply of men and vehicles, and for prompt handling and despatch of goods.
foreman, shed (tramways)
is in charge of a shed of a depot; controls car cleaning and repairing staff, etc.; is responsible to management that general daily and nightly routine is efficiently performed.
foreman, yard
is responsible for parking or setting of vehicles in cartage contractor's or omnibus company's yard; has charge of setters, cleaners, loaders, etc. (729) q.v.; is responsible for allocation of duties, time-keeping and for cleanliness of yard and vehicles.
ganger (tramways)
controls and directs body of labourers working on repairs of permanent way of tramway system.
