255.—Riveters

- cycle riveter
- a machine riveter q.v. who rivets stays to mudguards, lubricator clips over oiling holes, and other small accessories to cycles.
- hand riveter
- a riveter q.v. working with ,a hand hammer; usually works in dual squad either as right hand or left hand riveter, i.e. using hammer in right or left hand, and is assisted by holder-up and rivet catcher (256) q.v.
- holder-up, holder-on, riveter's holder-up, riveter's holder-on
- (i) inserts hot rivet with tongs into rivet i hole, when this is not done by catcher (256) q.v., and presses heavy hammer or dolly against rivet head whilst other end of rivet is being hammered by riveter q.v.;
- (ii) manipulates apparatus of machine hammer for holding rivets in place and arranges gear to form a rigid backhold for them while they are being hammered.
- hollow-ware mounter, hollow-ware riveter
- a riveter, usually a machine riveter q.v., who operates a riveting machine or riveting press to fasten handles and other fittings to hollowware.
- hydraulic riveter, hydraulic riveter attendant
- a machine riveter q.v. operating head of riveting machine, the hammer of which is actuated by hydraulic power supplied to head through flexible pipes.
- inside riveter
- a riveter q.v. working on interior structure of a ship.
- leverman riveter
- see steam riveter attendant.
- machine riveter
; riveting machinist
- a riveter q.v. who controls head of riveting machine; holds hammer against rivet end and applies power (hydraulic, pneumatic or steam) to hammer by pressing trigger lever.
- pneumatic riveter, pom-pom riveter
- a machine riveter q.v. using riveting machine driven by compressed air, fed to hammer head through flexible pipes.
- riveter
- makes rivet (usually red hot, but sometimes cold) fast in position, by hitting it repeatedly and rapidly on end with a hand or power-driven hammer, in order to spread or "mushroom" the rivet end and so lock it tight in hole through two or more plates; is assisted by holder-up and rivet catcher (256) q.v.; sometimes specifically designated according to tool used, article riveted, etc., e.g., hand riveter, hydraulic riveter, pneumatic riveter, boiler riveter, holler shop riveter, bridge riveter, fencing riveter, girder riveter, iron wheel riveter, powder canister riveter, salt pan riveter, telegraph tubing riveter, riveting machinist, see machine riveter.
- shell riveter
- a riveter q.v. working on outside or shell plates of a ship.
- stay riveter, stay hole riveter
- a riveter q.v. who rivets in position copper stays of locomotive boilers.
- steam riveter attendant
; leverman riveter
- a machine riveter q.v. who operates a riveting machine driven by steam power.
