bumper, bumper-up ; assistant holder-up
assists holder-up (265) q.v. of riveting squad, where assistance is required on heavy work or in awkward places, by backing up holding-up hammer with another hammer.
catch boy, catcher, catcher boy
see rivet catcher.
heater, heater boy
see rivet heater.
rivet boy
(i) works bellows for rivet heater q.v. and throws or passes the rivets to riveter (255) or to rivet catcher q.v.;
(ii) a boy employed as rivet carrier or as rivet heater q.v.
rivet carrier ; rivet hander
carries hot rivets in shovel or tongs from fire to riveter or to holder-up (255) q.v. in riveting squad.
rivet catcher ; catch boy, catcher, catcher boy
catches or picks up, in tongs, hot rivets thrown to him by rivet boy q.v. or by rivet heater q.v. and passes them to riveter or to holder-up (255) q.v. in riveting squad; sometimes also inserts them .in rivet holes.
rivet counter
counts rivets, placed in position by riveters, for purposes of cost and wages calculations.
riveter's helper, riveter's labourer
general terms for workers assisting riveter (255) q.v. and includes bumper-up, rivet catcher, rivet carrier, rivet heater q.v.
rivet hander
see rivet carrier.
rivet heater, rivet man ; heater, heater boy, rivet warmer
heats rivets to required temperature for riveting in portable fire hearth, and throws or carries them, by means of tongs, either to riveter (255) q.v. or to rivet catcher q.v.
rivet warmer
see rivet beater.
