district fitter
a gas fitter q.v. who fits up customer's fittings and lays and connects up iron piping in houses, within a prescribed area of gas company.
fire fitter, gas fire fitter
a gas fitter q.v. fitting gas fire in consumer's premises.
gas and water engineer
a gas engineer q.v. who is also experienced in planning and installing water pipes.
gas engineer (not gas works) ; lighting engineer
plans lay-out of pipes, jets, taps, etc., for supplying houses, shops, gas engines, etc., with gas and superintends erection of suction plant; is usually himself a gas fitter q.v.
gas fitter
cuts iron gas piping to required lengths with hacksaw or special pipe cutting tool; taps ends of pipes for screwing into sockets for L-bends, joints, etc.; fixes piping in customer's premises, with staples; . fits burners, taps, meters, stoves, gas fires, etc.; finds escape and executes repairs; is sometimes also a plumber; cf. plumber and gas fitter (252); sometimes specifically designated, e.g. gas lantern fitter.
gas lineman, gas linesman (railway)
a gas fitter q.v. installing or repairing pipe lines for supplying gas to gas lighted signals, signal boxes, stations, etc.
lighting engineer (gas)
see gas engineer.
meter fixer
a gas fitter q.v. who fits meters, as required, in gas system.
stove fitter, stove fixer, gas stove fitter
a gas fitter q.v. who puts in and connects up gas stove and who makes necessary repairs.
stove maintenance fitter
a gas fitter q.v. employed in gas company's or local .authority's workshop, who fits together stoves, that have been returned for repair, after renovations have been made; may also repair stoves on customer's premises; usually done by gas fitter or stove fitter q.v.
