bench hand (patent roofing)
prepares patent roofing for fitting in position by cutting rods and angle irons to size in machine shears, drilling holes, bending to shape, etc.; works mainly at bench with vice, wrench, files, drills, etc.
constructional iron worker, constructional steel worker
cuts, saws, straightens, bends, roughly shapes and punches or drills, by aid of various machines, iron or steel girders and plates used in constructional work.
engineer, constructional
general term for skilled workers engaged upon erection or design of structural steel work, e.g., bridges, steel buildings, including erector, fitter q.v.
engineer, iron roofing; roofing engineer

erector ; constructional fitter, fitter, fitter-up
fits sections into position and builds up structure, e.g., door frames, stairways, roofing, from blue prints; works at bench to carry out fitting operations, cf. bench hand, fitter (210).
erector, galvanised roofing ; sheeter, sheeter and erector, zinc roofer
cuts galvanised sheeting to size, with hand and machine shears; places it in position on roof and rivets or screws it as required.
erector, gas holder ; gas holder fitter
one of a gang of men erecting a gas holder; slings and holds up plates, etc., in position and holts together in readiness for riveter (255) q.v.
erector, girder; steel girder erector, iron work erector ; erector (steel)
places in position, with assistance of crane, steel girders in readiness for riveters (255) q.v.; directs hoisting, swinging and lowering operations by signals to crane driver; much of this work is usually done by labourers.

builds up roof of all steel girder structure by bolting in position framework and plates prepared by roof plater q.v.

eye ribber (ferro concrete)
fixes in position with wire, iron or steel rods, prior to erection of shuttering in construction of ferro-concrete buildings.

erects steelwork of structure; fits various components, girders, columns, etc., on site; may also do work of blacksmith (190) in altering component parts.

patent glazing fixer, patent roofing glazier
assembles and fits together metal framework and glass of patent glass roof; with assistance of labourers, raises framework into position with tackle and bolts fast; cements all joints; fixes glass in frame with cement.
roof plater ; iron roofing engineer,, roofing engineer
marks out shape and size of steel plates and framework used in constructing roofs of all-steel girder structures, from detailed brae prints; measures, fits and marks out metal for machine man (200) q.v. and puts together ready for riveters (255) q.v. in shop.
