automatic machine fitter, automatic machine setter ; machine setter
a tool setter q.v. who adjusts and clamps or screws firmly in position, various cams, cutting tools, etc., of automatic or semi-automatic machines; gives instruction to attendants, e.g., machine minder (279), and does running repairs.
capstan setter
a tool setter q.v. who prepares capstan lathe when it is used for repetition work and is attended by unskilled or semi-skilled worker; cf. capstan lathe hand (200).
die setter (tin box, etc., making)
see tool fitter, press.
jig setter
puts together sections of jig and fixes or sets it with accuracy in machine tool, using micrometer in certain cases; usually done by tool setter or automatic machine setter q.v. in all but large workshops.
machine setter
see automatic machine fitter.
nicker and turner's fitter ; turning fitter
a tool setter q.v. who prepares machine for nicker (279) q.v.
rotary setter
a tool setter q.v. engaged in tinbox. etc., trade, in fixing and adjusting cutters of rotary cutting machines, and in executing running repairs.
screwer's fitter
see worming fitter (screws).
setter-up

tool fitter

tool fitter, engine
a tool setter q.v. engaged in preparing tools, etc., and fixing and adjusting them in machines in an engine shop, i.e. machining and finishing-off shop of large engineering works.
tool fitter, press ; die setter (tin box, etc., making), press tool setter
fits dies or press tools in power presses; keeps presses in working order, executes running repairs thereto and sometimes makes press tools, dies, etc.
tool maker
a tool setter q.v., who also makes machine tools; cf. tool maker (265).
tool setter, machine tool setter ; setter-up, tool fitter, tool maker
fixes and adjusts with clamps and screws, tools, e.g., drills, knives, dies, in machines, e.g., automatic or semiautomatic machines, lathes, presses, stamping machines; also sets or fixes gauges, cams, lovers and similar mechanism when machine is tended by machine minder with no knowledge of tool setting; operates machine tool to ensure correct working before handing over to machine minder; sometimes instructs new minder in working of machine; does running repairs and sometimes makes machine tools.
