- (i) makes crucibles by throwing mixture of fireclay and grog, i.e. , lumps of hard-burnt clay, broken bricks, etc., ground to a powder, with or without a further admixture of plumbago on potter's wheel (a small revolving table), and working it up to desired shape with hands;
- (ii) makes crucibles by pressing paste into moulds, usually of plaster of Paris, with his hands, using simple pads and other tools; touches up defects, and smooths out roughnesses and cracks with a knife or smoothing pad when article is partly dry;
- (iii) presses clay or pug into shape between top and bottom moulds in hand or machine press to form crucible pot.

- (i) mixes raw and burnt clay, kneads it and shapes it by hand in successive layers of clay round mould, to form pots to be used in melting glass; allows time for drying between each layer, smooths out roughnesses and marks with a knife or smoothing pad;
- (ii) presses clay into shape between top and bottom moulds in hand or machine press to form pot.
- retort maker, fireclay retort maker
- (i) builds up successive layers of fireclay on a wooden mould, e.g. , round, D-shaped, or oval, allowing time for drying between each layer; then moulds on flange, to which door will afterwards be attached;
- (ii) makes small retorts on machine similar to that used for making sanitary pipes of stone ware; cf. sanitary pipe maker, stoneware maker (105).

- a retort maker (q.v.) who makes fireclay retorts and condensers for zinc smelting furnace.
- stopper maker (steel works)
- makes stoppers for steel ladles; removes sleeves and heads from used stoppers; bends rod to pattern, and puts on new firebrick sleeves and heads.
- stopper maker, tweel maker (glass works)
- makes, by hand, fireclay blocks, with or without the use of moulds, for covering mouths of furnaces in which clay pots (used to melt "metal" in) are baked at plate glass works; cf. stopper maker (138).
