- superintends coking of crushed coal in "beehive" coke ovens; directs work of loader, doorman and drawer (089) q.v.; obsolescent.

- controls power-driven coal charging machine for charging coke ovens, by operating various electrical controls; cf. coke oven loader (089).
- coke oven top man

- coker

- compressor man

- operates, by hand, machine which compresses charge of partially dried coal into a solid cake, ready for delivery into oven by charging machine, see charger; regulates supply of coal coming down chute from hunker to compressor by means of trap door.
- discharger

- gas main man

- gas regulator
- regulates supply of gas and of air for heating oven walls of coke oven plant, by opening various valves; reverses valves periodically, so that air inlet flue may be heated by exhaust gases; oils and cleans valves, and generally keeps them in working order.
- machine man
- general term for any worker engaged on a machine used for charging or discharging coke ovens, including charger, compressor man, electric ram driver, ram engine man q.v.
- pusher

- ram driver, electric
- a ram engine man q.v. who operates, by means of various levers, an electric ram or discharging machine.
- ram engine man, ram man
; discharger, pusher
- operates, by levers, machine (electric or other) which travels along the front of coke oven and forces red-hot coke from oven with a mechanically driven ram; ram is sometimes fitted to compressing machine or stamp mill, and often includes a coal levelling tool, or is adapted for charging as well as discharging.

- valveman (coke ovens)
; gas main man
- works on hydraulic main; controls valves which shut off ovens from gas mains while they are being charged and discharged ("pushed"); cleans out ascension pipes and binns, by hand, using various tools.
