027.—Labourers In Woods and Forests

cone collector
climbs trees to collect cones; packs them for despatch to seed extracting kilns.
coppice labourer, coppice worker
see plantation labourer.
copse cutter
(i) cuts or thins undergrowth of copse or holt with an axe;
(ii) cuts saplings for conversion into wooden hoops; often also cuts wood for hurdles, pea sticks, etc.
crown labourer
a labourer employed on crown lands, generally woods.
cutter (stick making)
cuts sticks in rough state from hedges, or from bushes or trees in woods, for manufacture into walking sticks, etc.
plantation labourer
coppice labourer, coppice worker, wood labourer; does unskilled work in tree plantation, thinning undergrowth, cleaning ground, protecting saplings, watching for forest fires in summer, etc.
root grubber, stump extractor
see wood grubber.
timber haulier
drags trunks of felled timber trees from woodlands to roadside by means of horses and wire ropes lashed to the trunks; dumps the timber or assists wagoner (023) (q.v.) to load on to timber wagon.

extracts stumps of trees from the ground by means of jacks or explosives when woodland is to be used for agricultural purposes.
