951.—Boiler Firemen and Stokers

assistant stoker ; stoker's assistant
removes slag and clinker from sides of furnace, by raking or scraping; removes riddlings, and assists stoker generally.
boiler blower (blast furnaces)
opens and closes valves to regulate flow of hot exhaust gases from blast furnaces to boilers; if supply of exhaust gas is not sufficient, lights and attends to coal gas firing apparatus.
boiler charge hand (gas works)
is in charge of all main stationary boilers in gas works; supervises boiler firemen q.v.; is responsible for maintenance of steam pressure, stoking of boiler fires and cleaning of boilers.
boiler attendant, boiler fireman (stationary engines), boiler firer, boiler man, boiler minder, boiler stoker, boiler tenter, engine fireman, engine stoker, firehole man, fireman (boiler), fireman (stationary engine), firer, fire tenter, furnace man (boilers), furnace stoker (boilers), steam boiler attendant, steam boiler man, steam raiser, stoker (baths, boilers, engines) ; fire beater
stokes fires which heat boilers used for raising steam to drive engines, pumps, etc., for heating baths, steam coils, etc., for steam brush cleaning, etc., or for use in making water gas; controls water supply to boilers and maintains steam pressure; usually also rakes out ashes.
boiler man, acid boiler man, sulphuric acid boiler man
a boiler fireman q.v. who feeds and attends boilers which supply steam to leaden chambers used in manufacture of sulphuric acid.
crane engine boy (quarries)
stokes boiler of crane; also signals to driver for raising or lowering.
firebeater
(i) see boiler fireman;
(ii) see fire raker.
fireman, dust destructor
a boiler fireman q.v. stoking and attending to fires of refuse destructor, and also feeding hoppers in which refuse is placed for lowering into furnace.
fireman (gas works)
stationed below charging and discharging stages in retort house, in charge of opening and closing of furnace doors; rakes clinker from furnaces with long rake; cf. fireman (953).
fire raker (boilers) ; firebeater
rakes out and removes ashes and clinker from boiler fires; usually done by boiler fireman q.v.
hydraulic boiler man, hydraulic fireman
a boiler fireman q.v. raising steam to drive engine which compresses water for hydraulic purposes.
leading stoker, shift foreman stoker
is in charge of shift of stokers in electricity power house, waterworks, or other public works or industrial undertaking; is often responsible for time kept by boiler attendants or stokers q.v.; delegates duties, inspects boiler gauges, furnaces, etc., from time to time and reports defects or irregularities to steam engineer or to engine attendant (950) q.v.
stoker's assistant
see assistant stoker.
surface fireman
a boiler fireman q.v. employed at surface of coal mine.
