- acting manager
- see business manager; obsolescent .
- advance agent
- goes on ahead of touring theatrical company, circus, etc., and makes arrangements for advertising, accommodation, etc.
- assistant stage manager
- as for stage manager (q.v.), whom he assists and for whom he deputises; usually acts as prompter (887) (q.v.) during performance.
- business manager
; acting manager (obsolescent)
- has charge of all "front of the house" arrangements in a theatre; engages, controls, and pays theatre staff; has charge of box office and all accounts; directs advertisement.
- producer
- is responsible for the production of play or show; decides positions and movements of actors (885) (q.v.), position of scenery and properties on the stage; indicates interpretation to be given to each speech; approves dresses, properties, design of scenery; directs rehearsals.
- stage manager
- is responsible for smooth running of performance; satisfies himself that scenery, lighting, properties, etc., are in order; sees that all artistes are on premises prior to performance, and if they are not, instructs understudies (885) (q.v.) to take parts of absent performers; sees that intervals are not prolonged; is in charge of everybody and everything on stage; receives reports from master carpenter (474), property master (887) and electrician (307) (q.v.) that everything under their charge is in order.
- theatrical manager
- undertakes, on his own account or for others, management of a theatre; arranges production; engages, controls and pays company and staff; is often himself proprietor or lessee of theatre; cf. business manager.
