agent, canal
in charge of clerical and manual staff at a depot on canal; acts as representative of canal company over specified area round depot; directs and supervises canvassers (731) q.v. and is responsible for efficiency of canvassing arrangements throughout area; supervises receipt of merchandise at warehouse and its despatch by canal; supervises discharge of incoming canal boats and despatch of cargoes to consignees by road or rail; collects freight charges, warehouse dues, etc., from traders; keeps record of cash received and paid, and remits sums collected to company's head office.

agent, ship; shipping agent
(i) (at port) represents a shipowner or shipping company at a seaport, using own premises and staff; arranges for discharge and shipment (including transhipment) of his company's ships' cargoes, calling at, or sailing from, port where he is stationed, and issues necessary instructions to port or dock authority, wharfinger (732), master stevedore (732) q.v., etc.; receives bills of lading in connection with outgoing cargoes and conducts necessary correspondence with traders; completes ship's papers (manifest, etc.) in preparation for her sailing; receives ships' papers from masters of incoming ships, and sees that consignees have title to goods, forming part of cargo, claimed by them; collects freights due to shipping company, sends them returns or statements periodically or as required, and remits to them moneys collected by him; issues tickets to passengers who travel on his company's ships; is sometimes also responsible for coaling and revictualling ships calling at port; usually being remunerated on commission basis;
(ii) (inland town) represents shipowner or shipping company in an inland town, using own premises and staff; in charge of canvassing arrangements in his town and neighbourhood; arranges with port shipping agent or with shipping company for shipment of cargoes from his district; issues and receives bills of lading and transmits them to shipping company or to port shipping agent; collects freights from customers; issues passenger tickets.
agent, tug company's
represents tug-owning company at a port; is in charge of canvassing arrangements and transmits orders for towage to company which he represents; is usually stationed at port other than that where company head office is situated, usually being remunerated on commission basis.
broker, ship
acts as intermediary between sellers and buyers of ships, using own premises and staff; negotiates sales of ships, too old for further service, to ship breaker; usually combines such work with that of shipping agent q.v. and of ship charterer q.v.
charterer, ship
acts as intermediary between exporters and shipowners or ship masters (733) q.v. in arranging charter parties, i.e. agreements for use of ships in conveying cargoes from one port to another; prepares charter parties, for which work he has expert knowledge of charter forms and of different types of vessels; advises exporters, on whose behalf he is acting, as to planning of voyage; usually also does work of shipping agent and/or ship broker q.v.
