- acting guard
- a porter-guard q.v. who acts as guard q.v. in case of emergency.
- assistant guard
; under guard
- a goods guard or passenger guard q.v. travelling on section of train which is uncoupled from main train at certain point and goes forward as separate train; before train divides, is responsible for control of brakes in his portion of train and for passing-on starting signal to driver (701) q.v.; after train divides, takes charge as guard q.v. of his portion of train; sometimes specifically designated, e.g. assistant goods guard, assistant passenger-guard.

- attendant, train
- attends to passengers' comfort on long-distance expresses, especially night trains; patrols train, answers enquiries, tidies lavatories, etc.; on night trains, prepares sleeping compartments, issues pillows, rugs, etc. to passengers in ordinary compartments; sometimes examines passengers' tickets en route; for worker mainly so engaged, cf. ticket col lector (705).

- a goods guard q.v. in charge of train of trucks conveying ballast for use in repair of permanent way.

- branch guard
- a goods guard or passenger guard q.v. who works on branch line trains; sometimes specifically designated, e.g. branch goods guard, branch passenger guard.
- carriage guard

- collector guard
- a passenger guard q.v. who collects passengers' tickets en route at certain stations on branch lines; sometimes issues voucher fares to passengers without tickets, and collects fares from them.
- conductor (electric railways)
- a passenger guard q.v. on an electric train.

- a passenger guard q.v. in charge of a small train (generally of one or two coaches, propelled by engine controlled from one of these coaches) employed on local shuttle services; sometimes issues tickets to passengers boarding train en route, and collects fares from them.
- electric train conductor, electric train guard
- a passenger guard q.v. who accompanies an electric train in coach next to driver; receives bell signals from gatemen on underground railways; cf. gateman (electric train).
- fish guard
- a passenger guard q.v. in charge of train of trucks conveying fresh fish from port to London or other inland centres, and travelling under passenger train signalling arrangements.
- freight guard
- see goods guard.
- gateman (electric train)
- travels on platform at end of a coach, or pair of coaches, in an electric train and opens and closes gates at stopping stations; gives, or receives and passes on signal when train is ready to proceed.
- goods guard

- a guard q.v. who works on a goods, ballast or mineral train, whether on main or branch line or in yard or siding; is responsible for seeing that packages or full trucks for foreign lines are delivered or uncoupled at tranship stations; sometimes also does work of train preparer q.v.
- guard
- in charge of a train (passenger, goods, etc.); examines train before journey is started to ensure that it is in running order; is responsible for keeping records of running times of his train; controls emergency brakes, gives starting signal to driver (701) q.v., and delivers railway correspondence at stopping stations.
- mineral guard

- a goods guard q.v. in charge of mineral train.
- motor guard

- passenger guard
; carriage guard, passenger brakesman
- a guard q.v. in charge of a passenger train; sorts luggage and parcels en route to facilitate prompt discharge at stopping stations; sometimes examines and, in some cases, collects passengers' tickets between stations during journey; on rail motor and electric trains sometimes also issues tickets to passengers joining train at halts where there is no booking office.
- pilot guard
- a guard q.v. who pilots trains over portion of line where single line working is necessitated, or over bridges under repair.
- porter-guard, porter-brakesman
- a porter (706) q.v. employed most of his time as guard on local goods or passenger trains, learning guard's duties in preparation for promotion if suitable.
- relief guard, spare relief guard
- a guard (passenger or goods) q.v. who is available to take place of a guard absent from duty.
- sorting guard, parcels sorting guard
- a passenger guard q.v. who is specially delegated to sort parcels en route to facilitate prompt handling at stations.
- spare goods guard
- a goods guard q.v. available to take place of another guard absent from duty.
- train preparer
- goes along train in goods yard and sees that wagons are properly coupled before journey; graded as goods guard q.v. by whom work is sometimes done.
- tranship guard
- a goods guard q.v. who travels in train with passenger guard where goods from train are to be transhipped, i.e. loaded into vessels or transferred to other lines, etc.; remains with goods until transhipment completed and renders invoices to foreman porter (706) or to station master (700) q.v.
- under guard
- see assistant guard; sometimes specifically designated, e.g. under goods guard, under passenger guard.
