cutter, plate (textile printing)
cuts with hand gravers, on zinc plate, enlargement of design required on copper roller for use in pantograph machine.

receives from putter-on (block roller cutting) (932) q.v. wooden block or roller on which ls traced a design, and cuts lines or indentations with cutting chisel and hammer to follow design; hammers short lengths (less than one inch) of thin copper strip into the indentations in the cylindrical surface of wooden roller or on to surface of block, having first bent them to shape of outline previously traced and cut; repeats operation on fresh blocks or rollers for every colour that is to be applied to the wallpaper; often softens prepared felt by heating it, and hammers it over edges of copper strip to fill in parts of copper strip outline where solid block of colour is desired.
engraver (hand), hand engraver
cuts away surface of metal with hand tools, e.g., gravers, fine chisels, punches and hammer, to execute designs on copper rollers used for printing wallpaper, textiles, etc.
engraver (machine), machine engraver, engraver s machinist ; ruler (textile printing)
sets roller or plate to be engraved, in machine and guides drilling spindle over surface to engrave design already etched on surface, applying or stopping power by moving a lever.
engraver (pantograph), pantograph engraver ; pantographer
a machine engraver q.v. who also sets design on table of machine and by moving point on arm of drilling spindle over outlines of design, automatically guides machine graving tool over the metal surface of roller or plate; sometimes specifically designated, e.g., calico engraver, roller engraver, plate engraver.
etcher, roller etcher (textile printing)
immerses copper roller in bath of nitric acid, mechanically-agitated, to deepen engraved design, the unengraved surfaces being protected by an acid-resisting paint or enamel.
metal worker (linoleum)

pantographer (textile printing)
see engraver (pantograph).
picker
a hand engraver q.v. who engraves rollers following design traced thereupon by sketch maker.
ruler (textile printing)
