- bookbinders' tool cutter, bookbinders' tool engraver
- a die cutter q.v. who cuts, in brass, tools used by bookbinders for embossing purposes.
- brand cutter
- see mark cutter.
- copper roller engraver
- a die engraver q.v. who engraves lettering, monograms, etc., on copper rollers.
- die cutter
- cuts die in relief out of block of mild steel, using hammer and fine chisels, lathe and milling or routing machine and following a design shown in plan, elevation and section; cf. die sinker and die engraver.
- die engraver
- (i) a die cutter q.v. who cuts designs or letters in intaglio on metal dies with graving tools, for colour printing, stationery embossing, etc.; work is similar to that of die sinker q.v. except that design is not cut so deeply;
- (ii) cuts designs or letters in relief for typefounding, printing wheels, etc., using hand graving tools or by operating an engraving or pantographing machine.
- die sinker
- (i) a die cutter q.v. who cuts die in intaglio in mild steel blocks;
- (ii) engine die sinker; fixes steel block and plaster model or pattern of die to be sunk, in power-driven die sinking machine which works on principle of pantograph; guides pointer of machine over outlines of pattern; finishes die by removing rough edges, cleaning angles, etc., with fine chisels and hammer.
- die sinker's machinist
- (i) operates routing or milling machines to remove surplus metal from die; cf. milling machinist (200);
- (ii) operates die sinking machine under direction of die sinker q.v. who sets block, tool and pattern.
- engine die sinker
- see die sinker.
- heraldic chaser, heraldic engraver
- a die engraver q.v. who engraves dies in reverse or relief, required in making heraldic devices, using hand tools.
- letter cutter
- a die cutter q.v. who specialises in cutting letters in dies by pantograph machine.
- letter finisher
- removes burrs and cleans corners, etc., in machine cut letters with hammer and fine chisels.
- mark cutter, mark maker, stamp mark cutter, stamp mark engraver
; brand cutter, stamp cutter, stamp maker
- as for die cutter, cutting in reversed relief letters and other designs in steel and copper stamps for stamping or branding marks; uses routing machine to remove superfluous metal, if lettering or design is to be cut in high relief.
- mould cutter, mould maker (artificial teeth)
- cuts brass or gunmetal tooth mould to shape of tooth required with gravers, fine chisels and hammer; smooths and polishes moulds by rubbing with a small stick of Arblansas stone.
- punch cutter, punch engraver (typefounding)
- a die cutter q.v. who cuts letters, figures, etc., in relief on steel punches, by hand tools or by use of electrically-driven profiling or pantograph machine tool; the punches are subsequently used to impress type matrices in brass, copper or phosphor bronze.
- relief engraver
- a die engraver q.v. who cuts only in relief with hand tools.
- seal engraver
- a die sinker q.v. who specialises in cutting in reversed intaglio, designs or monograms for seals in gold, silver, stone, etc.
- stamp designer
- a mark cutter q.v. who designs and executes trade, proprietary or other marks, usually for use in making textiles; sometimes specifically designated, e.g., bleacher's stamp' designer, copper stamp designer.
- stamp cutter, stamp maker
- see mark cutter ; sometimes specifically designated, e.g., bleacher's stamp cutter, copper stamp cutter, endorsing stamp maker, steel stamp cutter.
