224.—Brass Finishers and Turners

bobbin maker (brass)
general term for any worker engaged in pressing, stamping, turning, machining, assembling or finishing brass bobbins.
brass capstan hand
a capstan lathe hand (200) q.v. working in brass.
brass finisher
general term for any worker employed on finishing brass castings or stampings, including brass turner, filer (233), burnisher (238), polisher (238), driller (200), solderer (262), fitter, etc., q.v.
brass finisher (bobbins)
finishes component parts of brass bobbins by turning off roughnesses an power-driven lathe and reducing to correct dimensions in milling machine; polishes on buff in lathe; assembles and fits parts together with nuts and screws.
brass fitter ; fitter-up (brass)
assembles and fits small brass parts, making any necessary adjustments with file, etc.; if necessary, solders them together; is engaged entirely at bench and vice.
brass fitter, angle
cuts and fits brass angle work, using hack or circular saw and mitre box; sometimes does brazing or soldering of angles.
brass fitter, wagon
a brass fitter q.v. who specialises in fitting brass furniture to wagons, rail coaches, etc.
brass lathe hand, brass latheman
see brass turner.
brass letter carver, brass letter cutter
traces letter or design on surface of brass plate, outlines it with graving tool, by hand, and cuts out letter, by routing machine; finishes by hand, with file, etc.; may also ornament metal by carving or cutting the surface according to design, with hand or machine tools.
brass machinist
feeds and tends automatic or semi-automatic machine which makes brass goods required in large quantities, e.g. screws, chains, nuts, bolts.
brass turner ; brass lathe hand, brass latheman
operates lathe for machining brass articles to cylindrical form (externally, internally or both), and cuts threads on brass articles.
brass turner, axle bush; axle cap brass turner
a brass turner q.v. who turns on lathe, faces and threads brass caps for axle bushes of road vehicles.
brass weight finisher
(i) turns, on lathe, and files, as necessary, castings of brass weights, testing from time to time in balance against standard weight;
(ii) machines small weights on capstan lathe.
brass weight maker
a brass turner q.v. turning weights from brass rods.
bush maker (for bearings)
turns or mills out on lathe, from phosphor-bronze or brass linings or bushes for machine or engine bearings.
fitter-up (brass)
see brass fitter.
