agent, financial, money
acts on behalf of one or more money lenders (q.v.) in arranging loans, working on commission basis; undertakes general financial transactions; cf. money broker.
broker, financial, money
procures loans on behalf of would-be borrowers, working on commission basis (brokerage); cf. money agent.
money lender, loan office keeper
lends money at an agreed rate of interest, generally on approved security; registered under Money Lenders Act, 1900; cf. pawnbroker.
pawnbroker
is licensed under Pawnbrokers Act, 1872, to lend money, ten pounds or less, at a rate of interest fixed by the Act on security of goods pledged to him; himself disposes of pledges of ten shillings value or less upon lapse of period prescribed in Act, usually by direct sale; sends other pledges to qualified auctioneer, with option of buying-in; often also conducts retail shop, cf. shopkeeper, retail (770), handling furniture, clothing, jewellery, etc., according to locality.
