742.—Lighthousemen and Crew of Lightships

instructor of lighthouse keepers
instructs men starting work as lighthouse keepers q.v., in regulations as to lighthouse lighting, and maintenance and running repairs to lighthouse machinery; himself first undergoes six months training at Trinity House.
lighthouse keeper ; light keeper
is in charge of a lighthouse and its crew; sees that lamp is trimmed at frequent intervals and is kept alight at prescribed times, that lenses are kept clean and lamp mechanism is maintained in order and that fog signals are given when necessary; is responsible for care of stores and of building.
light keeper
(i) see lighthouse keeper;
(ii) see master of lightship.
lightship man
attends to lights and signal warning apparatus, and performs other general duties on lightship.
lightsman
either a lightship man q.v. or one of lighthouse crew.
master of lightship ; light keeper
is in charge of lightship and crew; sees that lights are kept burning at prescribed times and that fog signals or other warnings are given to passing vessels when required.
mate of lightship
assists master of lightship q.v. and acts for him when he is not on duty.
