- driver (drifters)
- an engineer q.v. responsible for main and auxiliary engines in a fishing drifter; also stokes fires.
- driver of motor
- see motor driver man.
- driver, steam dredger
- has charge of engines and machinery on steam dredger.
- engine driver, engine man
- an engineer q.v. on small vessels, such as steam fishing drifters.
- engineer, marine engineer
- a ship's officer who is responsible to chief engineer q.v. for running and care of machinery aboardship; has thorough knowledge of engine fitting and mechanics and is responsible for dynamos, hydraulic engines, electric cranes, refrigerating machinery, donkey engines. etc., in addition to engines on main propelling shaft; must hold Board of Trade certificate appropriate to his grade; watches engine room telegraph for instructions from bridge; watches pressure gauges, and notes, chiefly by sound, smooth running of engines; carries out necessary repairs; takes watches in turn with other engineer officers; keeps log of shaft revolutions, etc.; issues instructions to firemen and trimmers (736) q.v., through chief or leading hands; usually specially designated according to rank, type of ship worked on, or kind of machinery which he controls, e.g. second, third, fourth engineer, grab barge engineer, hydraulic engineer, refrigerating engineer.

- has complete control of engine-room plant and crew, and is responsible only to master (733) q.v.
- motor driver, motor man

- looks after, or assists engineer in looking after, internal combustion engines of small motor vessel.
