732.—Wharfingers and Master Stevedores

agent, wharf
represents shipping company, firm of carriers, or barge owners, on a wharf, and superintends loading of firm's ships, barges, etc.
contractor, ballast (docks)
an employer who contracts to supply ballast required for ships, and, in most cases, to carry out actual work of ballasting.
manager, wharf
controls and supervises work being done on wharf; is responsible for care and maintenance of plant, etc.
representative, dock (not for dock company)
represents shipowners or a commercial firm and transacts business, as to loading and unloading of vessels for employer at an office on or near docks.
stevedore, master stevedore, superintendent stevedore
an expert in scientific loading of ships; undertakes loading of ships' cargo, with aid of stevedores (743) and dock labourers (745) q.v., for a fixed sum; may, however, do similar work directly as employee of shipping company.
stevedore, coal
a master stevedore q.v. specialising in loading ships with coal either as cargo or bunker coal; contracts to load ships on a tonnage basis, and employs coal tippers and trimmers (744) q.v. for this purpose.
wharfinger
runs and sometimes owns a wharf equipped with cranes and other appliances for loading and unloading vessels and fitted for storage; usually a master stevedore q.v.; sometimes specifically named, e.g. coal wharfinger.
