foreman (chessboard making, leather and strawboard shop)
cuts up strawboard and paper for chessboards on hand guillotine; sometimes also operates, by means of a lever, a blocking press, similar to that used by gold blocker (537) q.v., for decorating chess or backgammon boards with gold leaf; superintends female chessboard makers (688) q.v. and is responsible for work of leather and strawboard workshop generally.
working foreman (tobacco pipes, not clay)
sets up and repairs machines used by pipe makers (688) q.v. in any process of tobacco pipe making, other than of clay; also supervises and directs workers.
