chipper-up
carries out first stage of tuning strings of pianos when partly finished; tunes strings into scales, with an ordinary tuner's key, but does not tune strings up to pitch; usually a learner or apprentice to piano tuning.
toner
a highly skilled tuner q.v. who tunes and tones pianos, to ensure evenness of tone and perfect pitch, by pricking felted hammer heads to render them more sensitive.
tuner, piano tuner
(i) fits wires on to wrest pins; tunes and adjust to required pitch by turning wrest pins with tuning key, pliers and hammer, thus tightening or loosening wires; eases squeaking or sticking wooden parts by smoothing with graphite;
(ii) is employed by manufacturers or retailers, or works on his own. account, travelling about, and tuning and regulating (as in factory) pianos in private houses, concert rooms, etc.
