billiard ball maker, billiard ball turner
makes ivory billiard balls by turning solid pieces of ivory on lathe constructed with special adjustable holding chucks, and by applying hand tools to the revolving ivory; is specially skilled in turning billiard halls which are held in eight different positions during turning; cf. turner.
turner, bone turner, buck horn turner, celluloid turner, horn turner, ivory turner, vegetable ivory turner
makes or turns articles of tortoiseshell, celluloid, xylonite, erinoid, ivory, bone, horn, as case may be, on power-driven lathe; in large works, sets up material and adjusts lathe tools and gauge; keeps lathe running and stops it, if necessary, to change tools during turning; in small works, fits up work and applies hand tools to material as it revolves at high speed on lathe; may be further designated by article turned, e.g., bone disc turner, bone haft turner (cutlery and tool handles), button turner, counter turner, horn handle turner.
