bronze letter printer
a bronzer q.v. who operates platen printing machine applying size instead of ink; passes sheet thus printed to bronzing machine minder q.v.
bronzer, printer's bronzer ; printer's gilder
general terms for anyone engaged in bronze printing; usually applied to bronze letter printer, bronzing machine minder, duster, or metaller q.v.
bronzer, card ; card edge gilder, card gilder
paints card or card edges, with size and puts on bronze dust either by hand or by machine, burnishing by machine when required.
bronzer, lithographer's
applies bronze powder by hand, with pad. to paper printed in glue or size by lithographic process.
duster, duster-off
(i) removes, by hand, with brush or pad, metal powder, flock, etc., from parts which have not been sized;
(ii) holds prints under nozzle of suction pump, which sucks off surplus metal powder.
edger, gilt
see gilder (bookbinder's).
finisher, card
see gilder, card.
gilder (paper staining)
(i) a block printer (535) q.v. who prints with liquid gold colours;
(ii) prints wall paper with size and passes it through bronzing machine, by which metallic powder is applied and the surplus powder drawn off by suction; cf. bronzing machine minder.
gilder, book-edge gilder, edge gilder (bookbinder's) ; gilt edger
places book (after trimming) in press, and scrapes edges until perfectly smooth; brushes edges over with size, lays on gold leaf and allows it to dry; finally burnishes gold leaf by hand with a tool; in some cases, applies colour to edges before gilding, thus producing "red under gold" edges.
gilder, card; card edge gilder ; card finisher. printer's gilder
(i) (card edge gilding) places cards in press after they are trimmed and scrapes edges until perfectly smooth; brushes them over with size, lays on gold leaf and allows it to dry; burnishes gold leaf by hand with agate or bloodstone burnishing tool;

gilder, mount
a card edge gilder q.v. who gilds edges of mounts.
gilder, passe partout
applies size and bronze dust by means of machine to passe partout binding.
gilder, printer's
(i) see gilder, card;
(ii) see bronzer.
machine feeder, bronzing (lithographer's or printer's)
takes sheets after they have had parts of their surface printed or coated with size and places them in bronzing machine.
machine minder, bronzing
is in charge of bronzing machine; sets and adjusts it for correct working; replenishes bronze dust box; cleans and oils working parts; takes sheets of paper off machine after bronzing, and examines them.
metaller
lays sheets of dutch metal (bronze) or gold leaf on work previously painted with size.
