- lays, stretches with claw hook, and fixes carpets, with or without underlying felt, as planned by carpet planner q.v.; frequently done by carpet planner.

- measures floor space of room to be covered and decides best method of laying carpet; cuts out pieces to shape of room, matching pattern where possible; often also lays them (see carpet layer).

- general term embracing carpet layer and linoleum layer q.v.

- lays, and fixes with nails or glue, linoleum or oilcloth, as prepared by linoleum planner q.v.; frequently also plans it before laying.
