- makes models of patterns (usually of wood), core boxes, striking boards, templates, etc., used by moulders in a foundry to form sand moulds from which castings are made; receives, from drawing office, drawing of part to be cast (or sometimes is provided with specimen of part itself) and makes rough working drawing therefrom; thence makes pattern in two or more parts, to facilitate removal from sand, using hand tools, wood-cutting machine tools, and a few special tools and devices; sometimes specifically designated, e.g. engineer's pattern maker; cf. pattern maker (278).
