412.—Boot and Shoe Makers and Repairers (General)

boot and shoe maker ; cordwainer, cordwinder
an operative capable of making a complete boot or shoe from beginning to1 end, i.e., cuts soles and uppers, attaches parts by sewing, by hand or machine, or by riveting in the case of soles, makes and fixes heels and finishes boot or shoe; sometimes specifically designated, e.g. bar shoe maker, cloth boot in alter.

cordwainer, cordwinder

hand-sewn maker
cuts out various parts of boot or shoe uppers and soles from measured patterns, pares or skivers edges, stitches seams by hand or with sewing machine, or takes uppers, made by other workers (not necessarily in same establishment), and makes hand-sewn boots or shoes through-out; making includes closing of upper, tacking on last, channelling and sewing on welts, and soles, attaching heels and finishing.
jobbing boot maker
a boot and shoe maker q.v. who makes boots and shoes for individual customers, usually in own workshop; as a rule, also undertakes repairs.
list slipper maker
a boot and shoe maker q.v. who specialises in making list slippers.
patcher
fixes leather patches to uppers of boots or shoes (in repair work) by hand or machine, either by stitching, or by applying adhesives.
repairer (boots) ; cobbler
repairs boots and shoes by resoling, heeling, stitching or patching the leather; operations include ripping off old sole or heel, cutting sole or heel leather to shape, cutting, shaping and sewing in new welt, if necessary, filling in sole, attaching sole by hand or machine sewing or riveting, cutting out, skivering and attaching patch to upper with solution or by sewing machine, attaching rubber soles and heels.
snob
slang term for journeyman boot and shoe maker, or for jobbing maker or for repairer q.v.
surgical boot maker
a hand-sewn maker q.v. who makes through-out, by hand, boots specially designed to accommodate malformations of foot or leg.
translator (boots)
a repairer q.v. who buys discarded boots; repairs and sells them.
