dial enameller
cleans surface of dials of watches, clocks, etc., with emery cloth or with flannel and turpentine, covers one side of dials with white or other coloured, enamel, by hand, with camel hair brush; places enamelled dials in stove and leaves for several hours; on removal, rubs-down enamelled dials with brick dust and flannel and finally polishes dial by hand with damp cloth and rotten stone; attends stove fire by feeding with coal when necessary.
dial painter
paints dials of watches and clocks with a ground paint on which figures are laid by dial writer (q.v.).
dial writer
prepares watch or clock dial by marking hour, minute and second markings, using drawing instruments, scales, etc., and tracing point; also marks figures on dial with tracing point; paints-in figures and markings with enamel, with hand brush; if necessary, applies transfer figures to dials from a sheet, by hand, using an adhesive; sometimes, only enamels and paints-in figures, etc., engraved on dial by dial engraver (283) (q.v.).
gymbler, jumbler
makes chronometer fittings on a lathe and finishes them with, hand tools; screws them into box or case, including gymbles, i.e., two metal circles on which chronometer rests and balances itself.
pendulum maker
fills with lead and solders together moulded or pressed sheets received from stock; paints one half of weight with lacquer when hot and brings up brilliant polish on buffing machine when dry; cuts rod to length from strip metal with hacksaw; cuts notch in top and rivets in tempered steel strip.
