assistant staff engineer (G.P.O.)
assists staff engineer q.v. and is in charge of a section of the engineering work in connection with one of the services or headquarters divisions of the Post Office Engineering Department.
assistant superintending engineer (G.P.O.)
assists superintending engineer q.v. and relieves him when necessary; is second in charge of the engineering work in one of 15 main territorial divisions of Post Office Engineering Department.
cable engineer (cable ship)
in general control of operations on cable ship in connection with raising and lowering of cable from and to ocean bed; supervises manipulation of cable on deck, and testing and repairing of cable; directs captain of cable ship (733) q.v. as to moving of ship from point to point; in small cable ships duties often assumed by captain.
chief wireless engineer (aerodrome)
in general control of staff of wireless engineers (305) q.v. and wireless operators (754) q.v. at aerodrome; responsible for installation, maintenance and repair of wireless apparatus in flying machines and in wireless offices at aerodromes; tests new installations to make sure that they are in good working order; carries out experiments in wireless telegraphy and telephony.
electrician-in-chief (cable ship)
see submarine superintendant [sic].
principal power engineer (G.P.O.)
is responsible, under engineer in chief, for design, installation and control of plant for generation, transmission and use of electricity for lighting and power services in Post Office; also responsible for pneumatic tubes, heating and ventilation, etc., and for P.O. London railway.
staff engineer (G.P.O.)
a headquarters officer responsible under engineer in chief, for direction and control of whole of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering work in connection with one of the services or main divisions in Post Office Engineering Department.
submarine superintendent (cable ship) ; electrician-in-chief
is responsible on shore under chief engineer for laying, maintenance and testing of submarine cables; has general responsibility for efficiency of cable ships and depots; receives testing reports from depots; issues orders to captain (733) q.v. or cable engineer q.v. for examination and repair of old cables and for laying of new cables.
superintending engineer (G.P.O.)
is immediately responsible, under engineer in chief, for administration and control of Post Office engineering works in one of 15 main territorial divisions of Great Britain.
