barb wire maker, barb maker, barb spinner
attends one or more machines, according to type of barb wire being manufactured, in which previously galvanised wire is spun with barbs, and is then spooled, sets a measurement gauge and feeds wire from drum through machine; fixes end of wire to rewinding drum; watches machine for proper working; replaces drums when empty or full.

a wire rope maker q.v. who specialises in operating a closing machine.
diamond mesh worker

gauze maker, wire ; metal gauze maker
as for weaver (370); winds thin wire from spools on to warp beam; sets beam in machine and fixes warp wires through reeds; fits up shuttle and sets machine in motion by means of levers; watches machine for any faulty working.

malt screen maker
a wire gauze maker q.v. who makes wire gauze screen used in screening malt.
mattress maker, link ; diamond mesh worker
assembles iron mesh-work for springs of combination and hospital beds; secures mesh work by bolt and spanner to frame and twists wire ends at edge through holes in frame with pliers.
mattress maker, spring; woven wire spring mattress maker ; spring mattress weaver, wire mattress weaver, wire mattress winder
weaves in a machine, spring mattresses for bedsteads, from steel wire; sets, by hand, various gauges and feeds wire into machine from spools; may also fit wire mattresses to frames.

rigger (wire rope)
(Fleetwood district) a wire splicer q.v. who maxes wire rope parts of trawl, by splicing, fixing thimbles, etc.; cf. rigger (Dundee district) (398).
rope maker, steel rope maker, wire rope maker, rope spinner ; layer, steel rope strander, wire cable maker, wire rope layer, wire strander
fits bobbins in position on wire rope stranding machine and feeds ends of wire through guides; watches machine for proper working; also sets dies of closing machine through which wire rope is drawn to tighten up the strands; fixes end of rope to winding drum.
splicer, cable splicer
a splicer q.v. who joins cable ends by separating strands and then interlacing (and in some cases soldering) one strand with the corresponding strand, placed end to end with it.
splicer, wire rope splicer
joins two wire ropes or cables together by hand by opening or unravelling the strands and interweaving' them; also splices eyes or thimbles into ends of rope; cf. rope splicer (398).
steel matting maker
a wire weaver q.v. who weaves steel wire into mats either by hand or by machine.

weaver, spring mattress; wire mattress weaver

weaver (wire), wire weaver
weaves wire into mesh or other forms, usually by machine; places bobbins of wire on spindles and feeds wire from bobbins through guides in machine; sets gauges and changes gears of machine, as required, according to nature of mesh; watches machine for faulty working, and rejoins broken wires.
winder, wire mattress

winder, wire mattress selvedge
weaves selvedge or edging for wire mattresses from steel wire; sets gauges and bobbins of wire in machine and watches for any faulty working.
wire cable maker

wire netting maker ; netter, wire netter
a wire weaver q.v. who operates and feeds machine which weaves wire netting.
wire rope layer, wire strander
