- chief lineman
- working head of a gang of signal linemen q.v. for construction or maintenance of wiring for railway signal system throughout specified area; responsible for wiring, connections, etc., between signal box levers and signals, points, etc.; cf. signal chargeman and chief lineman (railway telegraph) (311).

- as for chief lineman; works under workshop conditions as distinct from Railway Conciliation Agreement conditions.

- usually one of a gang engaged in periodic inspection and repair of lines of wire, etc., connecting signals with signal boxes, or on construction of new signal lines; is able to fit up, repair or replace all parts (wire, rods, joint castings, pulley wheels) between box levers and signals.
