- cuts sheet metal, plates and cast iron by directing an oxy-acetylene flame along line to be cut and by melting the metal; burns away rivet heads in same manner.

- a welder q.v. who repairs breakages or flaws in machinery, etc., by oxy-acetylene or electric welding.

- joins or welds iron, steel, etc., using a blow-pipe or burner with an intensely hot flame produced by the burning of a mixture of acetylene and oxygen; uses rod of soft welding metal for melting under flame and running, with flux, between pieces to be welded; cuts or breaks up large pieces, etc., for remelting by melting metal along a line with flame; cuts large girders to required lengths: in scrap metal yards, cuts up old boilers for re-melting in steel and iron works.

- (i) operates electric roller welding machine in which lapped edges of metal cask are fused and joined; passes metal cask over heated bar of machine and manipulates lever to cause electrically-heated roller to travel over seam or lapped joint;
- (ii) an acetylene welder q.v. who welds seams of metal cask with oxy-acetylene apparatus.

- (i) operates welding machines of various types e.g., spot welding, roller welding, scrap welding, in which the surfaces or edges of metal are heated to -welding point by resistance to electric current and are pressed together mechanically;
- (ii) operates hand welding apparatus in which a metal electrode is fused by electric current and made to flow into cracks, blowholes. joints, etc., in castings, or other metal -articles: so applies electrode that surrounding metal is also melted and strongly welded joint is made.

- an electric welder q.v. who welds iron or steel tram rails by electric process.

- an electric welder q.v. welding pipes and tubes into sockets and joints in boilers, ship's tubing, machinery, cycle frames, etc.; cf. tube welder (266).
