(i) regulates blast in Bessemer converter from a "pulpit" (elevated platform opposite converter) by means of valves controlled by levers, under direction of blower (170) q.v.;
(ii) works levers controlling turning or tilting of vessel or of converter; obsolescent term, duties now usually assumed by blower (170) q.v.
