classifier (paper mill)
a sorter q.v. who sorts rags at a paper mill.
cloth sorter and refiner
a sorter q.v. who sorts better class rags.
grader, grader and sorter, passer, picker, sifter, sorter
picks over heap or waste materials and sorts into small heaps according to kind, colour, grade, and condition; sometimes specifically designated according to waste sorted, e.g. bunt picker, linen picker, rag picker, rag sorter, flannel sorter, linen sorter, merino sorter, metal sorter, scrap metal sorter, stocking sorter, cotton waste sorter, new cotton sorter, old cotton sorter, paper sorter, woollen waste sorter.
sorter, bottle
sorts bottles according to size and shape; sometimes does bottle washing.
sorter, marine store
a sorter q.v. engaged in first sorting of miscellaneous waste or "ship's junk" for sale to other waste merchants.
sorter, new clip
a sorter q.v. engaged in sorting new rags, i.e. tailor's cuttings and other fragments of clothing, hosiery, etc., that have not been worn; cf. new clip sorter (360).
sorter, oakum
a sorter q.v. who sorts old ropes for sale to oakum manufacturers; may also tease out rope fibre.
