416.—Umbrella, Parasol—Makers, Coverers, Repairers

binder
hinds, by hand sewing with tape or narrow strips of same material as cover, certain umbrella and parasol parts (runner, open cap and hinge of rib).
cap milliner
sews up rosettes of silk or other material for fixing under often cap of umbrella or parasol; obsolescent; work now usually done by tipper q.v.
capper
secures metal cap to stick of umbrella or parasol, by hand; hammers it against metal plate in bench through which stick protrudes; drives pin through both stick and cap and files smooth; work usually done by finisher q.v.
coverer
sews up seams of segments of silk or other material to make covers, usually by hand; fastens cover to tips of metal ribs and ties on or braces seams to ribs by hand stitching; cf. tipper.
finisher ; fitter
attaches ferrule and open cap (see capper) to umbrella or parasol after cone has been fitted; attaches wooden ferrule by means of glue.

(i) see finisher;
(ii) see frame maker.
frame finisher
covers joints of umbrella frames with protective loather pads; removes roughnesses and finishes frame in readiness for covering.
frame maker, umbrella frame maker ; fitter
assembles frame of umbrella, or parasol from manufactured ribs and other parts; threads or supervises threading of ribs on notch with wire; gouges out slots in sticks on power-driven lathe and fixes springs, runner and notch; often also repairs broken frames.
hemmer
sews seams and hems of umbrella or parasol covers by hand or machine; cf. coverer, machinist.
ironer
irons covers, after their attachment to frame, by means of special iron, boated by gas or electricity, or by other means.
machinist, sewing machinist
sews seams of umbrella or parasol covers by treadle or power-driven machine.
maker-up, marker
marks or makes up stick of umbrella or parasol with pencil, for position of spring slots, using a standard board; work usually done by frame maker q.v.
mender ; renovator, repairer, translator
(i) darns, patches and otherwise mends umbrella or parasol covers;
(ii) replaces ferrules or broken ribs, repairs springs, etc.

sunshade maker
as for umbrella maker.
tipper, tier, tipper and tier
fastens covers to holes near tips of metal ribs of umbrella or parasol, and ties on or braces seams to ribs by hand stitching; makes rosettes, etc., for attachment under open cap; attaches band or button pieces; cf. coverer.
translator
see mender.
trimmer, parasol trimmer, sunshade trimmer
sews trimmings, fringes, etc., of lace, silk, etc., on parasol, by hand.
umbrella maker
general term for any worker capable of performing all the operations or engaged in any process of umbrella, etc., manufacture, including capper, coverer, frame maker, finisher, tipper q.v.
