413.—Boot, Shoe, Slipper—Clickers and Cutters

clicker (boots and shoes) ; cutter
cuts out parts of uppers of boots and shoes, either by hand, using a brassbound template which he places on leather and cuts round with a knife; or by operating a power-press, which descends upon pattern placed on the leather and presses out shape required; cuts skin to best advantage, allowing for differences in stretch or leather; sometimes specifically designated, e.g., press clicker, ideal press clicker.

cutter, fittings
a clicker q.v. who cuts fittings, straps, bars, facings, etc. by hand, with a sharp knife and brass-bound template or by machine press, fitted with shaped knives.
cutter, insole ; insole stamper
a pressman q.v. who specialises in stamping out insoles, by power press.
cutter, lift ; lift chopper
a pressman q.v. who cuts heel lifts, i.e. layers of leather from which heel is built up.
cutter, lining
cuts out linings for boots or shoes, by hand or machine.
cutter, middle sole
a, pressman q.v. who specialises in cutting middle soles (light leather sole between insole and bottom sole) of light leather, cutter, pattern; cuts out, by hand, from sheet zinc or cardboard, patterns of different parts of uppers of boots and shoes for use of clicker q.v., following drawings made by designer; is often also a designer q.v.
cutter, puff
a pressman q.v. who specialises in stamping out toe-puffs, i.e., pieces of leather used for stiffening toes.
cutter, rough stuff

cutter, slipper
a clicker q.v. who specialises in tutting slipper uppers.
cutter, sole
a pressman q.v. who specialises in cutting soles for boots and shoes.
cutter, stiffening
a pressman q.v. who stamps out from pattern, in a machine power-press, stiffeners, i.e. pieces of leather used for strengthening and shaping hacks of boots and shoes.
cutter, vamp
a clicker q.v. engaged in cutting vamps and goloshes (parts of upper forming front and side) of hoots and shoes by power-press.
designer (boots)
designs new styles of boots and shoes; makes drawings from detailed measurements, of various parts of upper, from which designs, patterns are made for use of clicker q.v.
insole stamper
see cutter, insole.
lift chopper
see cutter, lift.
presser, pressman, shoe pressman ; ranger, rough stuff cutter
operates a machine press, which cuts out rough stuff, i.e. soles, insoles, middle soles, stiffeners and heel-lifts of boots or shoes, from leather; places a knife, having required shape, on leather and pushes it under press, which comes down and presses out article; sometimes specifically designated according to kind of machine used, e.g., revolution pressman, Yankee pressman, or kind of footgear being made, e.g. slipper presser, slipper pressman.
ranger
see pressman.
split lift machine man
a lift cutter q.v. operating a machine which cuts split-lifts, i.e., the first piece of leather to form heel.
