403.—Knife or Machine Cutters (not Gloves or Boots)

chopper (shroud making)

a band knife cutter q.v. using a guillotine.

cutter, cutter-out, stock cutter

cuts out material to stock sizes and patterns (of paper or metal), using shears, band (or jig) knife (power driven), press, slot knife or guillotine, and causing knife edge to travel along lines chalked on material or round edge of metal pattern; usually cuts a number of thicknesses of material in one operation; generally specifically designated, e.g., blouse cutter, cap cutter, canvas bag cutter, collar cutter, corset cutter, frock cutter, hat leather cutter, helmet cutter, hose cutter (gas mantles), lingerie cutter, lining cutter, pinafore cutter, polishing cloth cutter, sack cutter, shirt cutter, smock cutter, tick cutter, tie cutter, tip and lining cutter (hats), trimming cutter, umbrella cutter, underclothing cutter.

spreads fabric under press; selects metal stamp, i.e., die, required for pattern of leaf or petal, and places it carefully on fabric under press; moves lever releasing press which cuts petal; removes pressed shape and repeats operation; cf. cutter-out (paper artificial flowers) (558).

a cutter q.v. using a power-driven band or machine knife.

cutter, Pickering; cutter-out (fustian clothing)

a cutter q.v. who uses a Pickering machine to cut fustian cloth to pattern.

cutter, press

a cutter q.v. who places shaped knives on a number of thicknesses of material, places them in a hand or power press and so cuts out leather hatbands, cardboard for cap peaks, etc., and, more rarely, cloth for various purposes.

cutter (soft toys)

a band knife cutter q.v. who marks out shapes on plush, felt, cloth or other material with chalk, using cardboard patterns and cuts out shapes by machine; more rarely cuts out by hand, with knife or scissors.
