377.—Hand Lace Workers

Honiton maker, Honiton worker: a pillow lace maker q.v. who makes, on a pillow, sprigs or sprays of lace and joins them by bars of other lace work, Honiton guipure, or attaches them by hand needle work to a plain net ground (Honiton applique).
lace maker, lace worker: makes lace by hand on a pillow; fixes pins in pillow or cushion, and works design, which is drawn on strip of card attached to pillow, by manipulation of bobbins of thread; or by using upright needles on a parchment pattern, and separately manipulated bobbins of thread; sometimes specifically designated, e.g. blond lace maker, blond lace worker, pillow lace maker, point lace maker, point lace worker, torchon lace maker.
lace maker, tambour ; tambour maker, tambour worker: embroiders on lace net which is stretched over a tambour frame.
sprig maker, sprig worker: a pillow lace maker q.v. who makes sprigs and sprays of lacework to be subsequently joined up to make other lace or attached to plain net grounds; cf. sprig maker (machine worker) (376).
tambour maker, tambour worker: see lace maker, tambour.
tatting maker, tatting worker: makes tatting (a kind of knotted lace) by hand, using a shuttle, in which the thread is wound, to make loops and knot them according to design; cf. tatting maker (machine worker) (376).
