assistant engineer (G.P.O.)
(i) at headquarters and in technical sections in superintending engineers' districts. performs in greater detail, work carried out by executive engineer, q.v.;
(ii) in territorial sections, assists executive engineer q.v. and relieve him when necessary.
chief electrician
in charge of men employed as electricians (307) q-v., or as wiremen (311) q.v.; inspects jobs in progress, issues instructions; under direction of engineer is responsible for efficient carrying out of work on job.
chief electrician (cable ship)
carries out at sea electrical tests of submarine cables, by means of electrical apparatus, either as cables lie on sea bottom, or when hoisted on to deck of cable ship for repair; furnishes reports of tests to submarine superintendant (300) q.v.; supervises 2nd, 3rd and 4th electricians, etc., and jointers and assistant jointers carried on cable ship.
chief inspector (Post Office Engineering Dept.)
controls, under executive engineer q.v., a group of inspectors and workmen; prepares estimates for new works and renewals; supervises works in progress, whether carried out by contract or by direct labour; negotiates important way leaves and consents; prepares development schemes; carries, out maintenance, testing and inspection duties; is also employed at headquarters.
executive engineer (G.P.O.)
(i) at headquarters, is responsible under staff engineer (300) q.v. for research, design, standardisation, testing, etc., in connection with civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering works of G.P.O.;
(ii) in superintending engineers' districts is either in control of technical section of superintending engineer's office, or is employed as a sectional engineer in control of a territorial division and is responsible to superintending engineer (300) q.v. for whole of engineering work in a section.
inspector (Post Office Engineering Dept.)
makes surveys for minor works, and assists engineers and chief inspectors in surveys for more important works; performs testing duties; assists generally in supervision of minor staff employed on construction and maintenance work both indoors and outdoors; checks and directs running of motor transport vehicles; takes charge of a shift at a power station: assists in education of youths in training; may also be employed at headquarters.
