229.—Cycle-Makers, Fitters and Mechanics

bicycle maker
see cycle builder.
brake fitter
a cycle finisher q.v. who specialises in fitting and adjusting brakes to cycles, etc.
cycle assembler ; cycle builder
assembles component parts of a cycle, e.g., frame, forks, chain wheels, pedals, wheels, and adjusts for smooth running; works entirely by hand, using spanner, screw driver, file, etc.
cycle builder ; bicycle maker
(i) in large works, see cycle assembler;
(ii) in small workshops, makes and assembles cycle throughout; cuts steel tubing to size with hack saw to make frame and forks, fits to lugs and brackets, pins and brazes joints, see frame builder; builds wheels, see wheel builder (278); makes handle bar, see handle bar builder; pickles, japans and nickel plates frame, bars and other parts, see pickler (250), japanner (241) and nickel plater (282); assembles component parts and makes adjustments for smooth running, see finisher;
(iii) general term for makers of component arts, e.g., frame and fork, wheels, handle bars, seat pillar.
cycle engineer
repairs cycles, see repairer, and builds cycles to specifications, see cycle builder.
cycle mechanic
general term for any man who repairs or erects cycles, including cycle assembler, brake fitter, cycle repairer q.v.
finisher, cycle finisher, cycle finishing assembler
fits on all accessories of a cycle according to specifications, e.g. , lamp brackets, brakes, saddle, pump clips, saddle bag; makes minor adjustments with file, etc., though with standardised fittings, very few alterations are necessary.
fork builder, cycle fork builder
a frame builder q.v. who specialises in building forks.
frame builder, frame and fork builder, frame fitter
cuts steel tubing to required lengths; drills small holes through lugs, fork crown, bottom bracket, back fork ends, etc., and through tubes with machine drill; assembles parts on a holder or jig; inserts small steel peg in each hole to keep permanently in position for brazing or welding; may sometimes braze joints, see frame brazer (262) or welder (249); sometimes specifically designated, e.g., cycle frame builder.
frame setter
sets brazed frame into holder or jigs, and tests proper alignment against points on holder; heats any part out of alignment by means of blow pipe and bends by hand, when soft enough, to correct shape.
handle bar builder, handle bar fitter
a cycle builder q.v. who specialises in cutting, bending and brazing steel tubing to make handle bars; may also pickle and nickel plate bare in small works.
motor cycle fitter
a frame builder q.v. making motor cycle frames.
motor cycle maker
general term for workers building and erecting framework, engine, etc., of motor cycles, including frame builder, engine fitter (210) q.v.
repairer, cycle repairer
makes adjustments and minor repairs to damaged cycles; repairs punctures; refits new parts; is usually also a retail dealer in cycles and accessories.
tricycle maker
as for cycle builder.
