art iron worker
see ornamental iron worker.
art metal fitter
receives forged metal from art metal smith q.v. and marks off on metal, positions of holes to be drilled, angles shaped, etc., by his mate; fits parts together into required design with bolts, rivets and screws according to blue print; cf. fitter (210).
art metal fitter's mate
assists art metal fitter q.v. in putting work together and shapes, drills and files metal as required under instructions, using shaping machine, -hand and machine drills, punching machine, tapping and screwing stock and dies, files and hammers.
art metal smith
as for smith (190) specialising in art metal work, usually in iron, brass, and bronze; works from blue prints; cuts metal bar, rod or sheet with cold chisel or for heavier work, hot with cutting tool on anvil; shapes metal with assistance of hammerman or striker (190) q.v.; for scroll work, twists metal, hot or cold, by means of scroll wrench and horns in a vice; for leaf work, uses top and bottom tools to shape sheet metal under hammer; welds heavy work where necessary, cf. welder (190).
art metal worker
general term coy firing all the terms in this section, i.e., workers engaged in making ornamental articles from sheet, wrought and strip or bar metals—iron, brass, bronze, copper, e.g., gates, grilles, chandeliers, balustrading, altar rails, church screens, canopies, balconies, fenders.
brass mediaeval furniture maker
an art metal worker, usually a repousse -worker q.v. who specialises in brass furnishings or fittings of mediaeval design.
chandelier ornament maker
an art metal worker, usually an art metal smith q.v. who specialises in chandeliers, ornamented with scrolls, leaf work, etc.
church brass worker
a repousse worker, q.v. who specialises in church brasses; may also perform engraving work, see engraver (hand) (278).
leaf beater
an art metal smith q.v. who specialises in production of leaf work; uses top and bottom tools on anvil and shapes sheet metal under hammer with assistance of hammerman; for very light work uses a lead block on which to strike.
mediaeval metal worker, mediaeval smith
an art metal smith q.v. who specialises in ornamental gates, grilles, lift screens, brackets, etc., of mediaeval design.
modeller
see repousse worker.
ornamental iron worker ; art iron worker
an art metal worker, usually an art metal smith q.v. who specialises in ornamental iron work, e.g. gates, railings, screens; sometimes more specifically designated, e.g. mediaeval iron worker, ecclesiastical iron worker.
repousse worker ; modeller
makes ornamental name plates, shields, fire screens, church brasses, brass furniture, etc., from sheet copper or brass; works from blue prints or designs; shapes sheet metal by cutting with hack saw or with chisel and hammer; beats and raises surface of metal to required design on a pitch or lead block with chaser's hammer, chasing tools and punches; sometimes uses a power-driven vibrating snarling iron.
saw piercer
cuts a perforated design in sheet iron, brass, copper or bronze with a fret saw.
