banksman
a foreman q.v. at salt works, at surface or "bank" of mine or quarry.
charge hand
see ganger (artificial stone and cement).
charge man
(i) (patent fuel ) is in charge of operations in manufacturing patent fuel; teste the mixture of coals and pitch in process of manufacture, and decides when consistency is correct;
(ii) (salt works ) is responsible for regulating supply of steam, brine, etc., and general working of plant in vacuum process.
coal foreman, coal mill foreman (cement)
a foreman q.v. in charge of grinding mill in which coal is ground for use in manufacturing cement.
foreman
allocates duties and directs work of semi-skilled workers and labourers; maintains discipline; engages and discharges workmen under him; authorises time sheets; sometimes specifically designated, e.g., fillers' and loaders' foreman (cement works), foreman lead mixer (pencil works), foreman lime burner (lime kiln), kiln foreman (cement), lead mill foreman (polish works), mill foreman (cement works), paste lead foreman (black lead works).
gaffer
see ganger.
ganger (artificial stone and cement) ; charge hand, gaffer
supervises work of men engaged in making artificial stone or concrete slabs and blocks under instructions of general foreman.
overlooker (cement)
a foreman q.v. responsible for a specified section of work and in charge of men engaged thereon.
sampler (artificial stone)
see tester.
superintendent of mixture (patent fuel)
is responsible for the working of machines and belts, etc., which convey coal or coke dust and pitch to the hoppers.
tally man (cement)
keeps account of weight or quantity of raw materials received and of cement produced; sometimes done by foreman or ganger of fillers and loaders (099).
tester (artificial stone) ; sampler
tests manufactured stone, to ascertain its tensile strength; inserts specimen in testing machine, applies power or (pressure, hydraulically or by weighting beam; observes and records pressure or force at crushing, breaking or cracking point; usually done by manager or by foreman.
